Scientist Talk: Following the Thread along the Seafloor<Venue: Miraikan>

  • 2018-01-28 ~ 2018-01-28

There are many mysterious creatures living on the seabed that cannot be seen from above ground. What do these creatures eat?

Because food gradually works its way from the top of the sea to the bottom, the creatures who inhabit the seafloor survive by eating the leftovers of other sea-creatures.

One example of this is driftwood. Many creatures live off the flesh of other animals, and the soft part of plants, yet lignin, which makes up 20–30% of trees, is difficult to digest. Previously, the kind of marine creatures that were consuming this lignin, was not well understood.
