Event for Fascination of Plants Day <Venue: Miraikan>

Dates: Wed 10 April – Sun 3 June 2013

Venue: Miraikan 3F Science Workshop and other venue

Fee: entrance fee for Miraikan only

May 18th is Fascination of Plants Day, the day to share the fascination of plants and enthuse about the importance of plant science. We spotlight plants, which are normally very quiet, with related events between 10 April and 3 June.

Morning Glories, which have various different types and colors, Thale Cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) which is an introduction to the world of plants, and genetically modified crops which might solve some problems. Turn your eyes to plants which have an interesting side and see the possibilities and dangers in advanced technology.

Event detail:

■Science mini talk ‘The story about gene of Morning glory’

They look almost like they are competing with each other with beautiful, rare and curious shapes and appearance.  Hear about how its genes work to make them like that.

Dates: Sun 28 April-Mon 6 May 2013

Time: 11:45-12:00 *except closed days

Venue: 5F Permanent Exhibition space ‘Explore the Frontiers’

■Observation Experience, ‘See the difference of prototroph (wild strain) and variant thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana)’

You can use microscopes like researchers. Compare their leaves to try to find out how the
genes work.

Dates: Sat 27 April-Mon 20 May 2013 *except closed days

Venue: 5F Permanent Exhibition space ‘Explore the Frontiers’

■Science talk ‘Good-bye hay fever! –Would you eat genetically modified rice?’

People say about 20 million people suffer from hay fever. There is a proposal to ease cedar pollinosis by eating specially developed genetically modified rice. We focus on the latest developments.

Dates: Sat 20 April

Time: 14:30-15:30

Venue: 3F Science Workshop

■Science talk ‘Sunflowers to be SUPER plants - genetically modified plant will clear cesium from polluted soil.’

The super plants, improved genetically modified plants, suck cesium out of the soil to save the land in Fukushima and restart agriculture. We’ll see the facts from studies and assignments before implementation.

Dates: Sat 1 June

Time: 14:30-15:30

Venue: 3F Science Workshop

■ Endoxa ‘genetic modification’

Genetically modified crops are already supporting our table. Would you eat them?

We’ll think and discuss about the necessity and safety of them.

Dates: Wed 10 April- Mon 3 June *except closed days

Venus: 5F Permanent Exhibition space ‘Explore the Frontiers’
