Scientist Quest June 2017 Lineup<Venue: Miraikan>

The title for the event on June 10th is: 'What Color is the Future?: A Future with Organic Thin Film Solar Cells'

Have you ever seen solar panels on the roofs of houses or other buildings? What we are researching is the next generation of solar panels: Organic Thin Film Solar Cells – light, thin, and colorful. These new cells are different from previous solar cells in that they can simply be stuck onto surfaces and used straight away. They can be applied to walls, windows, and many other places. What color shall we make the roads, walls, and windows of the future? “Let's use the color of thin film solar cells!” Let's think about our colorful future together!

June 25th's event is titled: 'Mad Science? Transforming Life at the Flick of a Switch!'

We all started out as a single cell – a fertilised egg. As the cells divide over and over again, before long, life emerges. What induces these changes? The answer is proteins. For example, if a protein comes along that orders a cell to form a head, the cell that receives that order will transform. Depending on whether it's light or dark, the production of proteins in our body stops and starts. If we apply this technique to fertilised eggs, we can artificially change living things. Let us think about the implications of such techniques for world.
